I went out to Red River and handed out flyers tonight. I hand a lot better luck getting people to take the new flyers. I just said that it was a flyer for my website and emphasized the free stuff. Most people were took a flyer, whereas before when I talked about trying to sell my books, not so many people took a flyer. Before I batted around .200 to .300, tonight I hit around .600 to .700! I enjoyed doing this task so much more than before.
Last month I decided that since people would more likely look at free stuff on the web rather than buy stuff off the bat, I decided to do some drawings for a video shoot of "Lot Lizard Lolita," "A Dozen Pizzas For Big John," and "From Rundberg to My Burg." The videos will just be footage of me playing and singing and drawings that depict stuff in the songs spliced in. I will probably just do the shoots at my house by myself. The whole enterprise might come off a pretty onanistic, but I will at least try to do strong, rich drawings for the videos. I can't emphasize how important it is to me that I can cultivate an audience from the general public, the "Great Unwashed," the People Who Read People Magazine. I will cater to this audience as much as if not more than whatever audience I hope to actually sell books to.

I went to Austin Books and Comics today to check up on my consignments. I happily discovered that I had sold one copy of my latest comic book! I don't know who bought it of course. I'm hoping that it was one of the people that I handed info out to on Red River in February. It could have been a couple of people I know, or it could have just been a patron of ABC.
I think that I will go out next week and hand out some more flyers for my stuff. I will ask around to see if anyone I know bought that issue, but the thought that I can advertise and persuade someone in the general public to go out and buy a copy of my book really excites me. |
