About Richard Alexander
Richard Alexander was born and raised in Austin, TX. He attended the University of Texas at Austin and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts there in 1988. He graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York City in 1991.
In 1992, his quixotic pursuit of the wrong woman lead to a diagnosis of schizophrenia. Three years later, another doctor amended the initial diagnosis to schizoaffective disorder.
Over the years, Richard produced copious amounts of comic art and some music that relate to this diagnosis and it's repercussions in his life.
Richard's magnum opus, "The Legend of Richy Vegas," finds our man chronicling the events and people that led up to his diagnosis in 1992. "The Legend of Richy Vegas" consists of two prequel volumes that conclude the previous series, "The Consequences of Bringing Light," then moves on to the twelve volume series of "The Legend..." proper. Richard concluded "The Legend of Richy Vegas" in November of 2021 with issue number 25, and one can now buy all fourteen issues in the Comic Books store on this site.
Richard lives in Austin, Texas.
Artist statement for the end of "Richy Vegas: a Psycho Memoir."
In the Spring of 2008, Whilst enjoying an alcoholic beverage, I decided that I believed in God. The artist Tommy Lanigan-Schmidt told me a few days earlier that I was a person of faith-unconventional though that faith may be. "Close enough for Rock and Roll," I concluded as I swilled my tallboys. Incidents like the one I related here at the end of this comic seal the deal. Sure, I think about purely irrational thoughts and hallucinations that I once experienced and rightly conclude that there's nothing to them. But, there's enough that I experienced that kicks into a realm where I am unable to distinguish between where my madness leaves off and where things of a divine nature begin. Why do I have to be the one that parses out what is real and what is not? I will just depict the dilemmas I am faced with and see if, like all good art, they pass the test of time.
